Is This The Galaxy Gear?

The upcoming Galaxy Gear, Samsung’s first smartwatch, is due to be announced in just a couple of days.  Up till now we’ve just been speculating about what the device could be and what it could look like.  Well today we get our first look at what is said to be a prototype of the device thanks to VentureBeat.

As you can see, it’s definitely not the most discreet device out there and it’s definitely not the paper thin watch many of us dream of (although I’m sure that will come once they get those flexible displays rolling out the door).  While this is said to be a prototype, the source says that the actual device won’t be much different than what we’re seeing.
I have to say I’m personally a little turned off by the size but I’m always open to trying new things.  I’ll wait to see what this thing can really do before passing any sort of judgement on it.

Acer Iconia A3, a budget-friendly tablet

The A3 isn’t going to blow anyone away, but the real magic is said to be in its budget friendly price.

IFA 2013 is still a few days away, but that’s not stopping Acer from jumping the gun a bit with several new product announcements.
In the smartphone arena, Acer has unveiled the 6-inch Acer Liquid S2, which appears to be the world’s first 4K Ultra HD recording smartphone. On the Android PC front, we have the Acer DA241HL All-in-One PC. Finally, when it comes to tablet announcements, we now have the new Acer Iconia A3.

The Acer Iconia A3 features :

a 1280 x 800 resolution display
powered by a quad-core 1.2GHz A7 processor
- likely a MediaTek chip of some kind.
a 5MP camera
 microHDMI
- microSD
- Android 4.2.

The A3 isn’t going to blow anyone away, but the real magic is said to be in its budget friendly price. At €250 ($330) for the Wi-Fi model and €300 ($395) for a 3G variant, the Acer Iconia A3 comes in at about the same price as devices like the iPad Mini, yet it is a 10-inch offering. The price might not sound that attractive next to the many lower priced Android-powered 7 and 8-inchers, but it is still very affordable.

When’s it coming? The Wi-Fi model will arrive in October to select markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The 3G model will arrive about a month later. No word on if or when the device might come to North America.
For those looking for something even cheaper, it’s worth mentioning that Acer has also announced several updated colors for the budget 7-inch Acer B1 and 7.9-inch Acer A1. The former now comes in Ocean Blue and Vermilion Red, with the later available in white, Smokey Grey and Ivory Gold.

LG official Makes G pad 8.3

LG has made the G Pad 8.3, for which we saw a teaser video just a few days ago, official. The sequel to the original Optimus Pad (LG has since dropped the "Optimus" moniker from their flagship line) is evidently packing a 1200x1920 display, Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor at 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage, Android 4.2, and a 4600mAh battery along with a 5MP rear camera and 1.3MP front shooter.
The tablet also carries some LG-specific features including QPair, which will shoot messages and notifications to the tablet from your phone, and QMemo.
LG says the G Pad 8.3 is expected to roll out in North America, Europe, and Asia "as well as other regions" starting in Q4 2013, but is keeping quiet about pricing, which "will be announced at launch time."
We should see the 8.3 at IFA, where it will be officially introduced but until then, check out the full press release below.
LG TAKES ON GLOBAL TABLET MARKET WITH ‘LG G PAD 8.3’
New Tablet to Debut at IFA 2013, Worldwide Rollout to Follow
SEOUL, Sep. 1, 2013 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet, the latest addition to its G Series lineup of premium mobile devices. The all-new LG G Pad 8.3 boasts the first Full HD display on an 8-inch class tablet, a unique user-experience and wide range of connectivity features. Set to officially debut next week at the IFA 2013 trade show in Berlin, the LG G Pad 8.3 builds on the recent launch of the LG G2 superphone, reinforcing LG’s commitment to leadership in advanced mobile devices through its premium G Series products.
“Complementing our G Series smartphones, the introduction of the LG G Pad 8.3 further strengthens LG’s premium lineup consisting of our most cutting-edge devices,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our G Pad is just another example of LG delivering devices with the unique selling points consumers around the world will appreciate.”
Pocket-Sized Portability with Powerful Battery
Despite its large display, the LG G Pad 8.3 features a slim and sleek form factor that is comfortable enough to hold in one hand. Such compact portability is based on LG’s learning from consumers regarding the optimum size of a tablet. While maintaining its portability, the LG G Pad 8.3 squeezes in a powerful 4600mAh battery for long-lasting usage time but is still as light as a newspaper at just 338g.
First Full HD Display Tablet in 8-inch Class
Incorporating a key attribute of other premium G Series devices including the G Pro and G2 smartphones, the LG G Pad 8.3 is the first 8-inch class tablet to offer a Full HD display. The G Pad is equipped with a 1920 x 1200 WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array) display capable of delivering picture quality with even higher resolution than a standard Full HD display. In addition, the Qualcomm? Snapdragon™ 600 Processor with 1.7GHz Quad-Core CPU enhances the viewing experience with powerful performance as users will be able to enjoy Full HD content without any compromise.
True Convergence Experience with QPair.
The LG G Pad 8.3 meets the demanding requirements of the convergence age by improving connectivity between multiple devices. With the unique QPair app, every call and message received on a smartphone will appear on the G Pad for a true convergence experience. Users can then send simple replies through the LG G Pad 8.3. QPair also allows the G Pad to easily connect to other manufacturers’ smartphone and tablets (Jelly Bean OS recommended). Notes created on the G Pad’s QMemo can be seamlessly saved into users’ smartphones and shared from either device.
User Experience Maximized for a Tablet
The LG G Pad 8.3 offers practical features that provide real-life benefits, such as enhanced multitasking. Thanks to its 8.3-inch Full HD Display, user experience (UX) fea-tures unique to the LG G Pad 8.3 are maximized for the large screen:
Slide Aside enables seamless multitasking by simply “sliding” currently open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe
QSlide controls up to three different apps in one window with no interruption, especially convenient on a large screen
KnockON turns the device on and off by tapping the display twice
The LG G Pad 8.3 will be rolled out globally in key markets including North America, Europe and Asia as well as other regions starting in the fourth quarter of 2013. Prices will be announced at launch time.
Key Specifications:
• Processor: 1.7GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm? Snapdragon™ 600 Processor

Details And Images Of That Wacky Sony Camera

A few weeks ago, we caught a glimpse of a new camera attachment from Sony that appears to putan entire camera on the back of your mobile device, in addition to the existing camera. I have to admit – it's kind of a neat concept, if properly executed. Today, a few new images – as well as some details about how the lenses will work – have surfaced over at  Sony Alpha Rumors.
Here's the skinny: the lenses will be dubbed "Smart Shot" (a combination of "Smartphone" and "Cybershot"). There will reportedly be two to choose from, the QX10 and QX100, which are modeled after the Sony WX150 and RX100MII, respectively. They'll connect to the back of your smartphone, pair through Wi-fi and/or NFC (it wasn't exactly clear how this will work), and be controlled through an updated version of the PlayMemories app. The lenses are also said to have built-in lens stabilization and shoot 1080p video.

  • SmartShot QX10: 18MP CMOS sensor, f/3.3-5.9
  • SmartShot QX100: 20.2MP CMOS Sensor, f/1.8-4.9
This duo is rumored to cost $250 and $450, respectively, and should be announced on September 4th. Only a few more days until full details are available.

Twitter app updated

Twitter has begun rolling out an update for its official app, making the conversations more — well, conversational. Rather than hunting down tweets between a series of people, you’ll now see the linear conversation in a thread (vine?). A few comments will be displayed, and the rest are viewable by expanding the conversation.
This brings the official Twitter app a little closer to mainstream social media, at least aesthetically. A simple move like this makes conversations much more approachable, as you don’t feel like the late comer who missed out on something.
The update also brings with it a few other features to allow for wider usage, like optimization for lower end hardware and the infamous “bug fixes”. Users can also report spam or abusive tweets from within the app, and the notification settings have also been altered.
As Twitter takes steps to hinder other apps, it’s taking a few to improve its own. In typical Twitter fashion, users took to Twitter to voice their displeasure. A search for “Twitter Blue Line” within the social service brings up such responses as “Does the Twitter Blue Line show whos’ pregnant and who’s not”, and even has some users threatening to quit. Others are a bit more appreciative of the change, while others think it makes it look like R Kelly is in your stream.
One great thing about the change? The 140 character limit is a bit less obnoxious. Should someone want to go on an extended rant, this helps us follow the downward spiral. Let’s be honest — 140 characters is a little SMS-ish for 2013, and very limiting. It’s good to see Twitter cross that line they set so long ago.

Asphalt 8: Airborne Now Available for Android Users

After being teased for quite some time now, Gameloft’s latest installment in the popular Asphalt series of racing games is now available for download for the owners of Android-based devices.

Already considered one of the best Android arcade racing game series in the world, Asphalt reaches a new turning point with the launch of Asphalt 8: Airborne, Gameloft claims.
The new title brings along a brand new experience to mobile users, with dynamic, high-speed aerial stunts, powered by a brand-new physics engine.

There are 47 high-performance cars included in the game, with 80 percent of them being new ones, coming from top licensed manufacturers, including Lamborghini Veneno, Bugatti Veyron, Ferrari FXX and Pagani Zonda R.

Furthermore, the game promises newly recorded high-fidelity car motor sounds, as well as 9 different settings to drive through, such as Venice, French Guiana, Iceland, the Nevada Desert and other exciting locations (mirror mode available for all tracks in Carrier mode).

Android users will also enjoy 8 seasons and 180 events in the Career mode, new Infected and Drift Gate game modes, and a detailed damage system, as well as great visuals, courtesy of next-gen shaders, real-time geometry reflection and other effects.

Other features of the mobile game include:

- Hit the ramps and take the race above the track
- Perform barrel rolls and wild 360º jumps
- Maneuver through the air and pull stunts while racing
- Simultaneous multiplayer action for up to 8 real opponents!
- Dare friends to asynchronous races in your favorite cars
- Compare scores on the new leaderboards with friends and drivers around the world
- Share your racing achievements and prove that you’re the ultimate speed machine

Gameloft also promises great music in this game, with licensed tracks from Bloc Party, Mutemath & The Crystal Method. Overall, fans of extreme arcade racing should really enjoy the new title, the company says.

Real Racing 3 new update

EA isn't letting its mega mobile racing franchise stagnate. The latest update to Real Racing 3 is version 1.3, adding iconic muscle cars from Dodge and Shelby. Four cars have been added to the roster: the 1969 Dodge Charger RT, 1971 Dodge Challenger RT, 1966 Shelby AC Cobra 427 (I think - going by a screenshot and some Wikipedia sleuthing), and the 1967 Mustang Cobra GT500.
According to the What's New text, there are also new events, new difficulty settings, tweaks to car physics and cameras, and "additional social networking options." Posters on the FireMonkeys developer forum say that means Google+ integration, as a G+ sign-in option has been added to the Settings page.
The rest of the game remains intact, time-based IAP upsell and all. It's still free to play, though you'll need to spend a lot of time getting in-game credits (including the exceedingly rare gold coins) if you want to unlock the new muscle cars without spending real money. Real Racing 3 is compatible with most newer devices running 2.3 and up. International readers, note the separate Google Play Store listing.

An iconic generation of cars joins Real Racing 3’s diverse garage, with the introduction of timeless classics from Dodge and Shelby.
• A collection of classic V8 muscle cars
• New events
• Difficulty tuning
• Visual physics enhancements
• Improved cameras
• Additional social networking options

Asphalt 8: Airborne is coming tomorrow

Asphalt 8: Airborne is coming to iOS and Android tomorrow, and Gameloft has just released the latest trailer for the adrenaline-packed racer where you’d be able to jump off platforms and defy gravity with your car for a few sweet moments.

It comes with even better graphics of near console grade quality. The new Asphalt 8 will also be optimized to run on the new Nexus 7 with its amazing 1920 x 1200 ‘Retina’ display.

The new Asphalt will feature a brand new realistic physics engine, a whopping 180 events, 47 cars and new game modes. Asphalt 8: Airborne supports simultaneous online multiplayer, but you can also race friends in asynchronous challenges, and all of that is tracked in leaderboards.

The game has eight maps and seven of them are brand new. You’ll get to experience racing in the Nevada desert, the busy streets of London, Tokyo and drive through frozen tracks in Iceland. The last, eighth map is a renewed map of Monaco. All of that racing comes with new weather effects for more immersive experience.

Asphalt 8: Airborne will cost $0.99 at launch tomorrow and we’ll update you as soon as it’s out.

Google Keep updated to allow for reminders, location tags

For those on the fence about Google Keep, today’s announcement may help.
Keep is being updated to allow for reminders to be set, as well as location tags to be attached to notes. Users will be able to set the time and date of the reminder, and snooze or reset it if needed. From the joint Android/Drive Blog announcement:
You can add time-based reminders for a specific date and time, or a more general time of day, like tomorrow morning. Adding a location reminder is incredibly easy too—as soon as you start typing Google Keep suggests places nearby.

In what could be the most useful function the update brings, your location tag will now alert you to your note when you arrive or are near the destination. If you have a shopping list, and set the location for your neighborhood grocery store, you will be alerted via Google Now.
The app has also been updated with a new interface, bringing the familiar three-dot slide-out menu from the left. In that menu, you will have the option to view all upcoming reminders, should you need to change or cancel anything. Users with multiple accounts can now switch between them with ease, making your work/home balance a bit easier. Adding photos has also been made a bit easier, giving users the option to take a new photo or add one from their gallery when tapping the camera icon.
While this is a welcome update, one glaring problem still exists: Keep is a Drive product that isn’t integrated into my Drive account.

YouTube updated to version 5.0,

To me, the developers of the YouTube app made a strange design choice. The left slide out menu, through many updates, used the old arrow icon at the top left instead of Google’s new hamburger button. They never fixed it, despite other apps getting the quick and easy fix. But now we know why: they had a full redesign of the app in the works.
This redesign employs Google’s love of the white Holo UI. It also includes the new hamburger button in the corner, symbolizing a slide out menu. The menu has direct links to favorites, watch later and playlists, which is a fantastic decision. The rest of the UI is based on cards, much like Google Music.

New Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs rumored

SamMobile, well known for providing the Internet with the best and most accurate leaks on upcoming Samsung devices, has just provided what they are claiming is a final spec sheet for the Galaxy Note III, expected to be unveiled at IFA in just under a month.
According to SamMobile, the international Note III, or SM-N900, will launch with a 5.68 inch Full HD Super AMOLED (1920 x 1080) display, 1.8GHz Octa-core Exynos 5420, ARM Mali-T628 MP6, 13 megapixel OIS camera, up to 64GB of storage, a 3200 mAh battery and Android 4.3, which was confirmed by a DLNA certification posted earlier today. The N9005, the variant that will be closer to what we see here in the US, will have a different CPU (presumed to be a Snapdragon 800) and GPU and has been confirmed to have 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM.
Of interesting note on storage capacities, samMobile says most regions will not see a 64GB version of the Note III and that 32GB will be standard. On the physical dimensions, they say that the Note III will be identical in size to the Note II, despite the larger display.
Samsung’s Note series of devices have proved to be quite popular around the globe; there’s little reason to believe the Note III won’t make a huge splash this fall. Still, with competition like a new Nexus phone, the Moto X, the LG G2, a new iPhone and its soon-to-be rival the HTC One Max, the Note III has a tough road ahead of it. Who are you placing your bets on to steal the show this fall?

Android Key Lime Pie 5.0 Release date and Features

One thing is confirmed that Google is not going to slow down the pace of releasing Updates of Android OS. Recently Google launched Android Jelly bean 4.3 that brought many new features with it. The update was released with Nexus 7 second generation. Now Google is on its way to announce Key Lime Pie 5.0 in near future. According to rumors, Google may announce the Key Lime pie 5.0 update as soon as October 2013 but it has not been announced officially. It has been assumed that tech giant will time the new release with one of their own product just like Google announced Android Jelly bean 4.3 with Nexus 7.

Since Google has recently released Jelly Bean 4.3, it is expected that Lime Pie 5.0 update will not be released for at least few a month. The update may come out in 4th quarter of 2013 or in the beginning of 2014. Google will be celebrating 5th birthday of Android that is why it is speculated that they will celebrate with the release of new OS key Lime Pie 5.0.

Now let’s talk about the features that are going to come with Key Lime Pie 5.0. Google Babel is the feature that will merge the collection of different popular messengers such as talk, Voice, SMS, Gmail and others into one service. Better control over the profiles of different users feature might also be enhanced in Key Lime pie 5.0 so that users can control their data more effectively within their profiles. Similarly, Lockscreen feature will enable the users to put the widgets in the Lockscreen. Another expected addition to Key Lime Pie 5.0 is revamped keyboard to make the typing experience smoother and faster.
Lime Pie 5.0 could include camera update for Samsung smart Phones exclusively. The update named Samsung Orb for the camera is software which will create panoramic photo across 360 degrees. Note that this update will only be provided to Samsung Smart Phones devices. An interesting thing to know is that Samsung has already confirmed that 5  Samsung devices will get lime pie 5.0 update after its release.

LG G2 officially announced

After months of leaks and teases by LG, the LG G2 has just received its official announcement at an LG event in New York. The G2 boasts some of the most powerful specs that we’ve seen to date. It also has some interesting little features and tweaks around it. Let’s take a look at the specs list:

  • 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display with dedicated graphic RAM
  • 16GB/32GB storage
  • 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization
  • 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 3,000mAh battery
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • 24 bit/192kHz Hi-Fi playback
  • 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9mm
  • Black and white color options
LG says that the G2 is designed for humans and that LG put long research into developing it so that it would be best for humans. That was part of what went into the design choices that they made such as the rear power button and volume rocker. They also found that a 5.2-inch display size was the largest size that an average human could comfortably hold. That’s also enhanced with the ultra-thin bezels that LG has incorporated. The G2 is also optimized for next-gen LTE-Advanced networks by using the Snapdragon 800.
LG has also included some new features in its UI:
  • Answer Me — Automatically answers the call after lowering the ringtone when the phone is raised to one’s ear.
  • Plug & Pop — Recommends options or related features to choose from when the earphone or USB cable is detected.
  • Text Link — Allows information embedded in text messages to be selected and easily saved in a memo or calendar and searched on a map or the internet.
  • QuickRemote — Not only can LG G2 be used to remotely control popular home entertainment devices, it can also learn from conventional remotes and be customized to operate multiple devices with flexible layouts and keys.
  • Slide Aside — Enables easier multitasking by simply “sliding” open apps off to the side using a three-finger swipe.
  • Guest Mode — Protects owner’s privacy by displaying only pre-selected apps when guests access the phone with a secondary unlock pattern.
It seems as though LG really did try and design the G2 for the ease of consumers. Some of the features such as Guest Mode and the learning mode of QuickRemote should be a major boon when using the phone. Although I’m not sure if it’s just me but I keep getting a Galaxy S III vibe with the whole “Designed for humans” thing. As for availability, LG has said that the G2 will be available on all four major US carriers and T-Mobile has sent out a press release saying that pricing and availability will be announced in the coming weeks. Sprint has also said that the LG G2 will be available with unlimited data and their unlimited guarantee.

Google rolls out Play Store 4.3.10 with usability improvements

It seems that Google has started pushing out the next major version of its Play Store app. Although there doesn’t seem to be any major overhaul, Play Store 4.3.10 introduces some changes that will give users a smoother and more convenient experience.

First up is a new sticky section under the Installed apps list. Previously, newly updated apps would be pushed down to the main listing after it has been updated. It is easy to lose track of which apps got updated, especially when you set Play Store to automatically update apps. Now, a Recently updated section is available at the top of the list, or below the Updates list if you have any, allowing for easy review of those apps.

Another usability enhancement is the grouping of update notifications. In the current version, there would be a notification for each and every app that was updated, which could become quite messy when we start talking about a dozen updates. To keep the information density low, Google has now combined all those notifications into a single update notification. Users interested in the details of those updates can still drill down into the list using the new Recently updated section mentioned earlier.

There are other minor changes included in the update, such as Books now showing both full and discounted prices during sales. Google has started distributing the update but it might take some time, even weeks, before it reaches everyone. If that sounds too long, you could also just grab the update from the link below and install the update yourself.

Samsung Unpacked event set for September 4

New Note device strongly hinted for pre-IFA Samsung event in Berlin

It's been rumored, and now we now for sure. Samsung is hosting an Unpacked event in Berlin, Germany on September 4 just before the annual IFA show begins in the city. The star of the show? Looking at this we're certainly looking at a new Galaxy Note device, possibly the Note 3. On the same day too, Samsung will be hosting an experience in New York City, for those not able to get to Berlin.
Samsung has used a pre-IFA event for the past two years to unveil the first two Galaxy Note smartphones, so the third generation model has long been expected for the same treatment. Whatever happens though, we'll be on the ground in Berlin next month to bring you the whole thing.
